Let's go and visit a wonderful and
magnificent Sanctuary located in the Panicale commune: "il Santuario
della Madonna di Mongiovino". It is a Renaissance treasure, recognized in 1929 as National Monument. Designed by Bramante and started in 1514, its building, interrupted due to the death of the big artist, was ended in 1515 by one of his pupils. The church, 29 meters high, has inside remarkable paintings, made by several famous painters, including Pomarancio. We go up to Panicale. The village, located over the top of a hill, dominates , on one side, the Nestore river valley, and, on the other, the Trasimeno plain. It is rich of architectural and pictorial finds, dated between the 13th and the 17th century. On March 8, 1786 twelve families of the village established an association, called Accademia, which built a small and nice wooden theatre; "Teatro del Sole". The theatre has been restructured and enlarged a few times, keeping, however, the original interiors, completely wooden and decorated with painted stuccoes and medallions. In 1858 it was renamed "Cesare Caporali" and in 1869 Pier Vittori donated the main curtain. This treasure of history and architecture has then been donated by the owner families to the Panicale village.    We leave to Paciano, an excellent walk (3 kilometers). Once arrived at this village-castle, we will appreciate the care of its inhabitants in maintaining it as a living room. Let's then go and visit a small wine farm, very representative of the ancient local culture. Women in the Trasimeno area have a developed entrepreneurial ability, as shown, in particular, by the owner of this farm. Young sommelier, she is perhaps the only one able to explain in English the wine making process. Helped by her father and brother, Anna takes personally care, lovingly, of her vines, and this is the secret of her success and quality of her wines. Anna will be happy to host at her house the tourists willing to taste both the products made from the old recipes of the farmer culture and the farm wine. She will also be available to let her guests share the pleasure of grape harvesting, that will allow to walk among the vine rows and use the shears to cut the bunches of grapes. In spring and summer, when the days look to consist of several hours, we can leave Anna' farm and visit an oil mill, still using the old grindstones and produces an olive oil, that, more times awarded for its excellent quality, the owner will be happy to let us taste on roasted bread. In November we will see live the olive crushing and feel an oil smell spreading around the mill's rooms and one more time we'll enjoy the taste of the "olio nuovo", as we say. Back home.   |
